SCUM manage 3 MTB trail Networks - Coondoo, Superbowl and Butterfly - just South of Nowra within the Shoalhaven. All trails are managed under agreement with Forestry Corporation NSW.
Get the Trailforks app to see where you are in real-time and find SCUM trails and others ... it's available for free from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store.
If you're looking for a quick spin or a full day in the bush, "Come and ride with SCUM".
Located 15 minutes south of Nowra, the Coondoo trail network is much loved amongst the MTB community and recognised as offering one of the South Coast’s best XC race loops as well as an accessible and fun MTB experience for all levels of rider. Coondoo provides a diverse 10km XC loop with possible configurations and loop lengths. Plenty of features include jumps, berms, bridges, drops, step-ups, rock sections and plenty of quality single track! The Coondoo trail doesn’t have significant changes in altitude but offers fast, flowy sections with a range of techy features (with A and B lines). Not only will you love the riding but the Currambene/Nowra Forest flora and fauna are magnificent with Waratahs and Red and Yellow crested Cockatoo amongst the myriad of native species on view.
The Coondoo Network also includes a dirt Pump Track and Skills park/Short Circuit course which is located right next to the trailhead. The 1 km circuit offers a large and diverse range of technical features including drops, skinnies, rock gardens, bridges, berms and wall rides. You can practice and refine your MTB skills while enjoying a ride right next to the car park!
Highly accessible, fun and family-friendly, Coondoo has a well-developed trailhead with plenty of car parking, picnic tables and bike racks.
Getting there:
Turn East onto Forest Road from the Princes Highway (A1) and continue 200m along Forest Rd.
Turn Right into Western Road.
Continue 1km along Western Road until a major junction with Coondoo Road (un-signposted) where the trailhead is located.
Located 20 minutes South of Nowra, Superbowl is home to SCUM's Flow X events and our 'do it all in one' network.
XC. Starting off at 'The Thing' the XC loop offers janky sections, pinches, flowy downhill with drops and bridges, flat twisty blasts and modest switchback climbing. The 6km loop will keep you on your toes while providing a great hit out or cruisy ride (you chose!) in the beautiful Currambene State Forest.
Flow. Fast and full of fun features, the Red Belly and Constrictor trails are about as good as flow gets! You'll be frothing all the way to the bottom. As a handbuilt, off camber trail, Shingleback provides a more 'old school' flow experience. Ride all 3 for the overall flow thrill.
Airflow. Superbowls Airflow features 3 jump lines providing the perfect combination to progress your jump and flow skills gradually. Airflow consists of 'Jumping Jack' (Green/Easy), 'Blue Tounge' (Blue/Intermediate) and 'Funnel Web Fly' (Black/Expert). Please note - Funnel Web Fly is for expert jumpers only - the jumps are to be jumped, do not roll them!
Superbowl has 2 Trailheads with parking plus an additional 2 areas where you can park.
Getting there:
Turn East onto Forest Road from the Princes Highway (A1). Continue along Forest Rd. for approx. 5km
Turn left into Butterfly Rd (you'll see a large green 'Currambene State Forest' sign at the entry to Butterfly Rd)
Parking:
Trail head 1 - the cleared area just as you turn off Forest Rd onto Butterfly Rd. Ride 'Yalway' trail to the top of the Superbowl Network.
Small Car park 1 - continuing along Butterfly Rd, 100m on the right at top of the hill. The entrance of the Airflow network is located here. Red Belly and The Thing are located opposite this car parking area.
Trailhead 2 - continuing along Butterfly Rd for a further 150m veering left at the cleared area. The entrance of the Constrictor Trail is located here and the 'up-track' from Constrictor and Red Belly ends at this area.
Small Car Park 2 - continuing another 200m to the 'crossroads' of Butterfly Rd and East Stump Rd. The bottom of the Airflow trails are located here and the XC loop passes through this carpark.
Located 25 minutes South of Nowra, just 5 minutes from Superbowl further along Butterfly Rd
Approximately 5.5km in length, Butterfly is a little rough and ready....and we like it that way! Mostly handbuilt and of the old school MTB variety, Butterfly offers everything from fast techy rock decents to short technical pinch climbs. You'll also experience more sustained switch back climbs and be treated to some very nice downhill flow sections as a reward for your hard work! All up, quality single track.
Butterfly has a basic Trailhead with parking.
Getting there:
Turn East onto Forest Road from the Princes Highway (A1). Continue along Forest Rd. for approx. 5km
Turn left into Butterfly Rd (you'll see a large green 'Currambene State Forest' sign at the entry to Butterfly Rd)
Go past Superbowl & continue for another 2km along Butterfly Rd until you reach a major clearing on the left.
Please note - in wet weather Butterfly Rd, beyond Superbowl, may only be accessible by all wheel or 4 wheel drive vehicles.
A great way to get more involved in SCUM is to join the SCUM Trail Crew; this dedicated group of people are responsible for the grooming, maintenance and building of the Club's trail network. Led by the Trails Coordinator the Trail Crew usually meet on the trails a week or so prior to each event. Many tools with be available, but bring your favourite rake, pruners etc. Make sure you bring gloves, a hat and plenty of water.
To join the Trail Crew simply turn up at our next 'Trail Crew event' OR contact us for more information. Keep an eye on our Facebook page for updates.
Important information:
All trail work must be coordinated by the Trails Coordinator. The occupation permit that SCUM has with Forestry Corporation, along with IMBA guidelines, outlines how the club should maintain its trails so that the trails are sustainable. This means that any work done on trails will:
Trail work can be categorised into three main types:
If in doubt, check with the Trail Coordinator before doing any 'work' on a SCUM trail; failure to do so can impact on our usage of the trails within the area.
